A rose to the team of Iowa State University students whose Interlock House came in No. 12 out of 20 select competitors in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. The ISU solar house, which is on display on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., through today, was designed and built by students from 11 departments. Interlock House scored 101 points out of 150 for "net metering," which measures the amount of energy it produces less what it consumes. Only five other houses scored better. Carbon footprints don't get much smaller.

In between reassembing The Interlock House, giving tours to thousands of visitors, hosting dinner parties as part of the competition, and holding their collective breath during 10 juried contests, students will post photos and share stories of their experiences in the 2009 DOE Solar Decathlon on the National Mall.
